OT - Computer Help

Mark Mandell - Gone Round in New Jersey

I keep getting "Connection Reset" when logging on and posting to WC with Firefox. It was suggested that I configure the computer for "Open DNS".

1. I don't know how to do that.

2. I don't know if that will compromise my machine's security in some way.

Any geek woodworkers able to advise?

tia (if I can get this to post :( )

Firefox has been getting more and more strict about protecting users from themselves and will, by default, block a number of actions by websites. If you are using the new release version (91?) then there should be a shield icon showing to the left of the site URL up top. If you click on that you can turn off the really paranoid protections for any site. You might try that to see if it helps. You can always turn the protections back on if it doesn't help.

Personally I've never had any problems with WC using Firefox and I've been using every beta and release version for at least a decade now.

I see the pic and I'm replying with Firefox on MacOS.

Clearing your cache may help. Look in Preferences, Cookies and Site Data to see where this is.

You will also have to re-enter logins for your other password protected sites like news and banks.

One thing I've found that helps on some sites with Firefox. I'm using Ubuntu (Linux) and some things are in different places (menus) on Windows. On my edition under the "help" menu is Trouble Shoot Mode. Click that and I get a windows asking if I want to restart in troubleshoot mode. This disables extensions, themes and custom settings. If I click restart I get another small windows with cancel and open options. Click open. You should get a browser window but with few icons on the upper right corner.

The picture works for me using Firefox version 78.13.0esr (64-bit) and using an obsolescent version of Safari (Version 11.1.2 (11605.3.8.1)) in an antique version of MacOS (El Capitan 10.11.6) released in 2015.

From those numbers, it should be obvious that I don't even try to keep up with the latest technology.
