Need adhesive advice

I'm building an altar chair for our church. Several pieces of amber onyx (2 cm thick) will be incorporated into the chair. Most of these pieces will be mounted horizontally, so I'm not to worried about the adhesive specs there. But, the front face of the chair back will have four pieces of this stone mounted vertically (imagine a four pane window).

These pieces will be about 7" (wide) x 4" (tall), also 2 cm thick. The pieces will be recessed into the back, but I really don't want them to fall out.

I asked at the stone shop what adhesive they use, a two part epoxy, and we looked it up online. It's around $2k per gallon (seriously). Yeah, I'm not getting that.

So my question is, what to use? Most of the pieces will be mounted horizontally (the seat, and 3" x 3" pieces on the arm rests [where the hands will land], and at the top of the rear posts/legs).

The pieces in the back will be inset almost flush, so they'll have some support, but I don't want them loosening and falling forward and out.

(A follow on project will see some pieces of this same drone mounted in the shape of a cross on the front of the pulpit, so I'll use the same adhesive there.)

I would leave a large enough gap between, to shoot a flexible caulk type adhesive into the space that could be fingered smooth before you peel the masking tape off. You make no mention of color, so advice is limited.

I’d use little wedges to hold things straight while doing the opposite side, then remove the wedges after the first side is set then the other.

Mirrors are mounted with silicone. You want some flex in the adhesive.

Perhaps the stone shop would sell a small quantity.

But if this is stone into wood I'd certainly use a flexible adhesive due to wood movement. The stone shop here uses a flexible silicone compound.

I’m a fairly spry 82-year-old who had been a reader/participant at WoodCentral since the demise of Badger Pond. I started visiting BP to learn something about finish for a project I’d completed and became hooked on internet forums as a way of increasing my knowledge about all sorts of topics. I have been a moderator for a couple other forums on subjects I enjoy. My interest in woodworking began in the early 1970’s when my wife and I had contractors add to our house near Traverse City, MI, and I ended up doing the trim work to reduce mounting costs. I had no tools. I bought a P-C skilsaw, hammer, screwdrivers and one of those wooden miter boxes with a backsaw. I made trim for windows and doors from one-by lumber and started my woodworking career. At the same time, I started a 50-year career as a ski instructor. I got onto the night shift at a mental hospital so I could ski days, and spent my 30s and 40s with that schedule. I eventually replaced the PC-upside-down-in-a-board with a real table saw and began the purchase of enough equipment to fill a jam-packed 40-foot shipping container we used after we sold our property in Michigan. The ski instructing had taken us to Colorado and we were spending too much on maintaining utilities for two homes. A couple years ago, the dozen years spent at 10,000 feet of elevation was making my body produce too many red blood cells, so we had to leave my “forever” home in the mountains and we moved back to Michigan. Now I have to find myself a shop space for all those tools in the container.

Several lines of 100% silicone caulk spread with a fine-tooth trowel will hold till the wood rots but will still allow the wood's minute mc changes.

Whatever adhesive you use, get some glazer's points to hold the pieces in until the adhesive sets. They are cheap and dead simple to use (you need a small painter's scraper and maybe a gentle hammer). Just pry them out with a scraper, no hole will show.
