Yet another stupid mistake you don't have to make

Barry Irby

I was gluing some cork on the bottom of a coaster. Have used 3M spray adhesive in the past, but was out of it, so decided to use Titebond III. Slathered on a nice coat on the wood, slapped on the sheet of cork and set it on the table on my new bandsaw with a bunch of weight on it and left it over night.

This morning I have a nice square patch of rust.

Who knew the moisture or fumes would go through the cork and rust the steel?

I have had Titebond go right through waxed paper and do the same thing. Since I don't always learn my lessons, this has happened to me more than once. I use WD-40 and 400 grit to remove the rust.

Aluminum foil is a good moisture barrier.

Good reminder, thanks for doing my learning!

Aluminum foil is a good moisture barrier, but . .

Condensation, that doesn't go through the barrier but forms independently, is often the culprit. Best not to put anything that has anything to do with moisture on your iron surfaces. I never even temporarily set a cup of coffee with a dry bottom down there.

In my experience condensation is not an issue unless there is a significant temperature difference. If concerned, put down a paper towel layer.

I use 1/8" hardboard under glueups.
