I’d appreciate your insight into making this next part of my DC mods both long-lived and safe.

Every place you can see a problem/deficiency/tweak, I’d appreciate you going ahead and listing your ideas, observations and caveats.

Here’s my wall mounting idea –

- install the Delta 50-850 motor/blower on the shop wall

- its weight is listed at 86LB

- its inlet will face downward to the Super Dust Deputy mounted directly below

- mount it to three 3/4” pieces BB plywood around 16” square

- attach this three 3/4” plywood and blower/motor assembly with Tapcon screws to concrete block walls

I want to use three pieces of 3/4” plywood to mount the blower/motor so I can move it out from the wall to centre it over the SDD’s outlet and increase shear strength.

How concerned do I need to be about –

- vibration from the blower/motor shaking the Tapcon screws loose

- the whole thing just eventually falling off the wall

In this design, the blower/motor is bolted onto the plywood on the wall.

It doesn’t use a shelf to hold the motor/blower and there.

Plus, there are no triangulated supports - am I right in thinking this will need shear support?

How much would running pipe strapping under the blower and screwing it to the joists help?

Hi Howard,

Give it direct support. Your own doubts tell you this. Particularly since it’s not practical to bolt all the way through the concrete. Structural principle: All loads go to ground, and direct to ground is better than back through a cantilever to the wall and thence to ground.

For wall mounting, do you know if the block wall is filled or hollow? Hollow block is very weak compared to concrete.

Tapcons might work ok in block. Never tried because I really don't like tapcons, just never got the hang of them. I prefer various types of sleeve anchors or those nail set types if it doesn't need to be removable.

You should be ok if you support it with large triangular brackets that span several blocks and have 4-5 anchors. Not my preferred method but should work ok. I would only anticipate vibration loosening if the motor or fan loses a bearing and you get seriously unusual vibration from something like that.

My own preference would probably be to make an angle iron stand for the whole assembly, but then I like stuff to be moveable.

Your blower will live happily on the wall. I had a 2hp/240v mounted on a double ply board that was screwed to a pair of 2x4's. The 2x's were bolted to the masonry wall with 1/4" lags into lead shields. 7 years and it never got loose. The lead shields will keep a strong grip in the block.

You should space your blower and cyclone at least 2' apart and use smooth-walled metal smoke pipe for the connection. The 2 foot gap allows the airflow to straighten out from the twisted flow coming out of the cyclone so your blower's fan blades will get the best bite on the air for maximum efficiency.

I believe any pipe strapping up to the joists would increase the vibration noise to rooms above.
