Super Dust Deputy problem - fittings don't fit

I just bought a Super Dust Deputy. Its 5" inlet and 6" outlet are causing me big probs.

I have 6" hoses off my machines so I bought an HVAC 6" to 5" reducer (uncrimped at both ends).

The SDD's inlet is 5" (actually it's 5 1/8). And the SDD's outlet is 6" (really it's 6 1/8"). My hose won't fit over it either.

What is your advice to modify SOMETHING/ANYTHING to get these things to fit efficiently.

And - what are your thoughts re any advice so I can get this going fast -

- how much extra room do I acquire if I buy crimped reducers and "un-crimp" some of the crimps

- does it make sense to drill out the reducer's rivets, move the collar a little and use a #4 screw to hold it in the new position

- where to buy rubber-type plumbing 6" to 5" reducer fitting

Advice needed -- problem -- Super Dust Deputy - inlet and outlet sizing

The reducer has female pipe size at both ends. You need a male, crimped, piece of pipe to go between your hose and adapter. Six inch pipe to the hose and crimped pipe to the adapter. You can buy these, but I made my own by cutting a short section of pipe off the crimped end of a piece of ductwork.

You can buy a crimping tool at Lowe's or Home Depot.

Having said that, you can call Oneida and explain the problem to them, and they will talk you through the solution.

You can crimp the ends of the pipe with a pair of needle nose pliers. Just stick them on the end of the pipe as far as they will go and twist. Over and over until you take a lap. start with a small twist and check the fit. Go over it again until you get what you need.

You can expand the pipe by cutting fingers on the end of the pipe. Cut in about 1 1/2" or 2" and make the fingers 1/2" or an 1" wide. Force them over the outside, tape them and use a hose clamp.

I cobbled my system together years ago and spent a LOT of time making things work together. Calling the maker of the SDD seems like a good Idea.

The crimping tool is significantly faster. Once you have one, you may find multiple uses.

Think I solved my Super Dust Deputy problem

In case anyone is wondering -

- 6" hose will fit perfectly directly on the SDD's outlet

this requires close to nil in the way of wrestling the hose onto the inlet

- they actually supply a 5" collar if you're installing duct rather than hose onto the inlet

- it fits perfectly onto the uncrimped 6' to 5" reducer

I'll need to tape it up to close things off

- but this poses 2 questions/opportunities/problems

I'll need to break down and just buy 5" hose and fittings to use it the way it's designed

(admittedly, a rather unusual idea in my typical Rosenberg Brain Process)

and just say goodbye to my 6" hose and fittings

As I continue to get myself organized, I'll keep you posted.

I like to use 'oversized' flexible hose. I don't know how much flow loss there is thru the corrugated hose compared to smooth pipe but I'll bet it's enough to make oversized hose worthwhile.
