Rails to Trails Bridge- painting
Bill Tindall, E.Tn.
One of the difficult jobs has been painting. The steel that will be covered by ties and inaccessible is painted before the wood goes down. At some later date when we get a windfall of money
we will spend the $150,000 to paint the rest.
The paint is an epoxy with a heavy load of Al flake. Its job is to penetrate and stabilize the rust. It costs $80 gallon.
One can see the decayed ties that are being replaced. Because we are working over the river we need to be careful that nothing falls in the river. Care and netting have been successful. We just reached land on the other side so these precautions can be abandoned for higher productivity.
The second picture shows details of the observation area. Measurement is for determining 2 x 6's to deck this part.
