Just how heavy are you guy's? Are we talking a 2' wide cat walk supported by two joists 13' long? I was thinking two 2 x 8's would be excellent and 2 x 6's would probably be fine.

Are these fingers floating, and subject to waves coming across a lake? If so, how you join this to both sides is more significant than the height of your joist. When big waves roll in, one will be up on the crest while the other is in the trough.

2 X 12's are the proper sized wood for that span. You never know how much weight someone might need to get across the catwalk in the future.
