Old Guy/ with wood stash

Hard to admit that I have more wood than I’ll ever be able to use in this life, but I do. One of the family projects on my list is a Murphy bed for a cabin I am fortunate to be able to enjoy in Ak. Easily built from 3/4 ply and numerous pieces of 1x2 pine or poplar. Years ago I acquired salvage rights to some bleachers in a high school gym built in 1960 something. I have built many things from these 18’ x 81/2 “ 5/4 vertical grain Doug fir boards, of which I have 52. With the price of plywood, I decided to use some of this wood, but just before I started to render it to the sizes I neeed,I wondered if I shouldn’t just pony up the cash and use plywood. Thought I’d ask for an opinion from Woodcentral before I proceed. Pretty beautiful wood, once plentiful but I have no idea if that’s still the case. What do y’all think. Use it or buy plywood to the tune of about 350 bucks.

The Murphy I built (Rockler kit) warned against using lumber in place of ply on a number of components. If you're using a kit, check their recommendations.

As long as there is accommodation for expansion in a large panel where ply would be used you should be OK. I am thinking of a large panel the size of a mattress where the mattress is concealed in the folded state. T&G or half laps should do the trick.

Are you able to resaw the 5/4? It may be on the heavy side.

I would find someone who appreciates the wood and sell/give to him or her and use plywood for the bed.

I called the manufacturer and they gave me a plausible explanation for the use of plywood on the bed rails. Scrounged up enough 3/4 ply for those two parts. I’ll use the fir for the rest of the build. Thanks for the input. I will try to sell the remainder this summer.
