Is this a job for JB WELD?
Barry Irby
I have a little bench top Hollow chisel morticing machine. A Grizzle built in 1995 I bought used. the handle is a steel rod about 5/8" in diameter. There is a collar (?) on the shaft with a hole in it for the handle. Unfortunately the business end of the handle is reduced in diameter to about 3/8" and is threaded into the collar. the threaded portion is only about 3/8" long also. There is a major opening for the handle that is about an 1/8" deep and then it necks down to the short threaded section. The hole is wallowed out nd the threads are son worn they will not engage. I was trying to use it today and managed to slug myself in the face hard enough to mangle my glasses... twice. (slow learner)
The easy fix would be to pack the hole with JB Weld and let it harden. I am skeptical that it would hole up. There is (Obviously) a lot of pressure on the connection.
Second thought would be to have it welded but I don't know a handy local welder and I am skeptical of that as well.
Third thought is to drill out the hole as deep as possible with a 5/8 bit, grind the threaded nub off the handle and insert the fat part into the hole. This would provide substantially more "shoulder" for the handle to bear against. Even though I have a drill press and a 5/8" bit I am not confident about drilling out the hole.
Any thoughts?
