Staining the desk

Recall granddaughter designed a desk for her room, and for her future rooms to be. She recently visited and set to work on the finishing of the desk.
The stain is an oil mineral pigment stain. It is applied with a "rubber" like shellac. The rubber enables a controlled delivery of just enough.

.and have used it even on floors. It's just nicer to me to apply stain than flooding, and with something like micronized pigment (Artist colors mixed into stain), it looks just about the same anyway with less cake on the surface from the pigments.
the interesting thing is that your stained cherry looks like my unstained cherry after a couple of years (perhaps the stain makes the final color more even after suntan?).
Thoughts on that?

That looks great. I always use a cloth to apply stain.

Hi Bill,
Granddaughter’s desk really touches the heart. Her own participation is a priceless experience for her.
What exactly is the rubber? I always use a wad of cotton t-shirt that’s been washed about a hundred times and isn’t shedding anything—for stain and shellac. But I don’t know nothing—enlighten us.

It doesn't matter. Anything that absorbs stain. In this case it was a piece of cotton knit folded into a ball then wrapped by a layer of knit cotton. Other times a wad of cleaned sheep wool wrapped in cotton knit.

Bill, I'm dense. I'm not understanding the term, "rubber," in use here. Is it an application method ? ..an applicator ? .. the product that is applied ?

In French Polishing the material is applied with what is called a "rubber". The stain application is done with something assembled like the shellac rubber so I borrowed this name to describe the stain applicator.
