Rust removal and restoration

Jerry Gibbs

I used an aggressive rust removal on some small tools, such as a square. I removed the rust and whatever coating was on the tool. What is my best option for keeping the tool rust free? Nothing, wax, blueing, spray lacquer? Blueing intrigues me but I know nothing. Jerry

Wax is the simplest and the cheapest. prior to waxing tools I buff the brass, steel and wood, usually rosewood, surfaces. Blueing is a very nice looking finish for steel. I believe that it is very sensitive to any surface contamination. I think that it will also discolor other metals that may be on the tool. Blueing solutions can be purchased at a local gun shop or eBay.
