Dear Woodcentral!

Just purchased the material to build three Titanic Deck chairs. Bought some beautiful air dried 8/4 Locus. Wanted to build them out of a local hardwood. Rough cutting the parts out and letting the material acclimate to the shop. Not a lot of complicated joinery so I believe the air dried material will be fine.

Teak makes the chairs too expensive to sell. Ordered the hardware from Rockler. Following the plans from Poplar Woodworking July 199 # 109. Found a digital set on the web and Decatur Blue Print enlarged them 200% and printed them out for us. Also working on my CNC to cut out the patterns.

I plan on doing some pattern routing. Ordered a new spiral bit up/down bearing pattern bit from Whiteside, knowing that Locus is hard on tooling. Has anyone built these chairs? Can you offer any advice or suggestions? Has anyone built one for sale?

I know what locust looks like but not what a Titanic chair looks like . Picture? I guess the only advice I could offer is to not put them on a ship at risk of icebergs.

Personally, if I was selling replica Titanic chairs the cost of raw materials would account for between 5% to 10% of the selling price.

Thanks Mark! Locust retails for around $5.00 a bd ft! Each chair requires approximately 40 bd ft and the hardware is close to $100.00. Plus my labor and overhead. Like all projects the first chair will be the challenge and for the future getting quicker and more productive to get the profit up. I did find a deal on the material I bought but one never knows if that will happen in the future so I always use “retail” prices to price out a quote.

Mock up

Build a mock up out of whatever. Practice and don’t be afraid to change techniques. You probably won’t have to do the whole chair, but if you do, paint it and use it.

Oh, nice chair. If I ever took a minute to sit down I would like one of those. Years ago I repaired a chair for someone that looked like that chair.
