Best Finish for Oak Staircase

I'm building a new set of red oak stairs for our 1960's split level. Just 6 treads/7 risers. My first attempt at housed stringers, that should be fun:>) Anyway, I could use some advice on the best finish to apply. Varathane or something similar? I thought about a hard wax/oil finish, but I don't think this is the ideal application for that. Suggestions appreciated!
