than to find a medium molecular weight hydrocarbon that is odorless. I would suggest forging on and after a while she will see that 1. it is harmless, and 2. the smell signals the near completion of a furniture project.

...not for a wife, but for a different odorless thinner. Dick Blick or similar art supply store will have several varieties, and some are much less offensive than others. My wife is an oil painter and uses Turpenoid. It's bound to cost a lot more than reguar mineral spirits.

Can't answer but... weird smells with poly-urethan

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I have noticed a weird smell that happens ONLY when I use both:

- an oil based polyurethane in the house (haven't in many years)

- AND we use the gas dryer (also in the basement).

This doesn't happen with one or the other, only when both are used. Not a more offensive smell than oil based finishes, just unique smell for that combination. I have since avoided the combination.

I have moved on to waterborne coatings and never looked back.

I've read this forum and others for years and not real long ago oil-based finishes were the absolute king and very few had anything good to say about water-based. It seems to me based on forum posts the tide has definitely turned towards favoring water-based.

Just a thought.

The gas dryer is supposed to be exhausting outside and only pulling air from the space it is in. If the dryer is causing smells, then you may have an exhaust leak from your dryer..

I get the same strange smell

If I am working in my garage and using my propane heater when I apply Poly it has a strange smell. If I just use the heater there is no smell.

It took me a few different time to figure out it is the propane heater and Poly causing the smell.

It take awhile to clear out if I can't open the door.

The vent for a gas dryer is a flue, venting the combustion by products out doors. The vent should be made of solid metal pipe and sealed. If you are smelling something indoors you have a leak and it is conceivably dangerous. Get it checked.
