Glad I was using push sticks

Joe in a Cleveland suburb

Tried to route a 1/4 x 1/4 groove in this molding before routing a dovetail socket in it. Using a 1/4 spiral bit came lose from the router and came up through the piece.

This happened twice. The second time I tightened the bit in the collet as hard as I could.

Maybe an up cut spiral bit shouldn't be used this way in a router table?

You need to check the bit and collet carefully. Have you used that bit/collet combination successfully before?

If you have a Mic, check the shank and check other bits you know work. Look at the shank closely to be sure there are no spurs or other damage. Make sure there is no oil on the shank. Clean the collet.

I wouldn't use it again, certainly not in that configuration.

Match the collet to the bit

Check your collet. If that is a 1/4" shank bit, you should be using a 1/4" collet in your router, not a 1/4" - 1/2" adapter in a 1/2" collet.

Joe, You probably already know this, but always make sure your bit is NOT bottomed out before you start tightening it. Always hold it up about 1/8" before the tightening starts to grab. Otherwise the collet starts to grab around the shank, which if bottomed out is preventing the wedging can get fully tight.
