Need drawer hardware recommendation

Shown are the desk parts, NOT, assembled as they will be in service. The drawer units will be at the ends of the top with a space for a chair between.

A pencil drawer will be installed under the top where the chair goes. I will dovetail a drawer together. The need is to fasten this drawer to the bottom of the desk top. Specifically, what quality ball bearing hardware do I need to buy? I have not used metal drawer hardware before and know little about it.

Considering this is modular and most likely will be disassembled and reassemble as it moves through your granddaughter's life maybe you want to make a self enclosed box with a drawer or tray in it for pencils. The box could be mounted and dismounted at will to accommodate moves and not mess up the function of the drawer. The top and bottom could be 1/4" plywood

I have struggled with side mount runners. Some of them have instructions that indicate the tolerance is +1/32", -0". I recently used Blum undermount runners on an entertainment console I made for my son. They worked beautifully in the end but getting there was a struggle. Actually fairly easy, but a horror story for me to wrap my brain around.

You'd think somebody would make hardware just for this.

The slides that Mark mentions are designed for keyboards, so they only extend 283-320 mm (11"-13"). Might be hard to access stuff in the back of the drawer. I don't know of high-quality, light-duty, full extension slides, but I'm sure someone makes them.

I've had success with hardwood slides (ipe works great), where strips of wood screwed down to the top edges of the drawer sides run in rabbeted channels attached to the underside of the desk top. You can probably cook up variations on this theme.

That design has a lot to recommend. For moving the top would not have a venerable drawer and hardware hanging off it. And best of all I would not have to use hardware at all.

In that case just build an upside down companionway sliding hatch.

I have studied the drawing and I don't know what I am looking at. Where is the drawer? What is function of these parts?

It would still have the bearing rails, but those pop off with a couple screws.

A caveat with this design is to use it on a top that you expect to stay flat. If it cups even a little, it will bind the action.

Top is made from a piece of rare lumber core plywood I bought from a company that produced these panels,now out of business. So I have the one situation where it will be assured of working
