Seen these supposedly new design bits that will cut 'door step' type cuts.

But interesting thing is cut two different pices & they will interlock together,

one pic showed two ov'm locked together with plank laid on top ov'm and automobile

drive up on them and they remained locked together. anybody tried'm yet

tell us about it.

Lock miters have been around for quite a while. I've used them on occasion in the past for one reason or another, but I am always confused by the fussy process of setting them up accurately. They don't hold all by themselves: they still need glue, but the added "stair steps" add mechanical strength, alignment, and additional surface area for glue. Personally, I use biscuits to reinforce and align miters.

Buck,

I have used a lock-miter router bit (CMT brand) to construct legs for a coffee table. Agree with everything Ellis said. Very strong joint due to all the glue surface area, but really fussy to set up. Practice first. Somewhere I wrote down instructions for set-up that I probable got off the internet. That helped. Don't know anything about the Kowood brand. Jim

I really hope that WHOEVER first said, "a picture is

worth more than a thousand words" got famous for it!!!!

The accompanying pictures & close up of the glue, lordy, lordy,

those are magnificent & close up, whowee, can't beat that!!!!

That glue up is impressive. Did you put quartersawn/medullary rays on all four faces? Wonder if wrapping them with surgical tubing or bungie cord would be good clamping technique?

That leg should never warp. I did some several years ago by gluing two pieces back to back and then veneering the two "edges" with quartersawn veneer.

I have been skeptical of the lock miter bits because you end up referencing off the very thin edge. How did that work for you?

Barry, yes, I tried to get all four sides the same regarding the grain as I did not have, or have access to thicker stock. Thank goodness I had switched to hide glue by that time giving me more working time and better cleanup options. Your suggestion for alternative clamping strategy's would likely work, I just didn't think of them.

You are correct regarding the thin edge IIRC. I practiced quite a bit but the edge of the miter was not perfect. Good enough for legs on a coffee table though - at least my coffee table :) . If I remember correctly, ensuring that my router fence was smack-dap flush to the router table and taking small cuts each pass helped out. Jim

Ok, I gotta jump in here. First the disclaimer- I am a hobby woodwork but am also the inventor of the patented Infinity Lock Miter Master (LMM) lock miter bit setup jig and licensed my design to Infinity Cutting Tools.

Now that is out of the way-

The LMM is a simple little jig that will save you tons of time and frustration setting the bit height and fence position when using a lock miter bit. I discovered a few things about the geometry of these bits that others had missed. I used that information to design the jig. It works with every brand of router and shaper bit whose cutting edge is a radius of the bit, which is the vast majority of router bits. If the cutting edge is a chord (mainly shaper bits), the LMM can still be used to set bit height, but setting the fence position requires an extra step.

Contrary to the claims by some bit manufacturers and woodworking gurus, that it can't be done, the LMM makes possible a setup that will allow you to make lock miter joints in boards that have different thickness, e.g. drawer with 3/4" solid front, and 1/2" fly sides. It will also allow you to make offset lock miters which have the joint line offset from the center of the 45°. That can be useful if you join 1/2" ply sides to 3/4" solid wood, want a solid wood corner, don't want to expose plies at the corner, or you want to add a radius to the corner.

There is a thorough, illustrated instruction manual that covers all this on the Infinity website.

One thing I recommend when using lock miters to make legs with four quartersawn faces, is make all four edges of opposing faces with the same profile and use the other profile for all edges of the other two opposing faces. (See photo below or the drawing in the instructions.) It just think it makes it easier to clamp.
