The water line to our house broke this past Friday. The repair man cannot come until Wednesday because he had to call the power company today and arrange for them to come out an mark the underground line tomorrow (oh, please, do let them come tomorrow!). The power line is in the same trench as the water line - 18 inches above it. So I have been clearing brush away from the area and making sure they have good access.
We are not entirely without water - our neighbor manages the well and pump, so he turns it on for half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening. So in about 30 minutes I'll grab all the water containers and get them filled up and flush the toilets!
I did this a few years ago and worked well. If your neighbor is real close just run a garden hose from your neighbors outside outlet and the other end to one of your outside outlet. then open both of the out let. but shut thr outlets at night just incase. good luck
I've done that too and it worked out very good for me. I had to run about 200 feet of hose and used a splitter fitting at one end. The splitter fitting was a Y configuration with 2 female ends and one male end which I capped.
I live in the country - I'd need 3 100' hoses for the closest one! The fellows are working on the line now and expect to have it repaired by the end of the day. Sure is a BIG hole! The utility lines (except cable TV) are all six feet down.
I remember the water line having to be a certain distance below if the power is not in conduit however. Don't remember the distance though.
The one that got me out here is that outbuildings with power must run a ground sized for the sub-panel at the outbuilding back to the power source. Ground is dry enough that they don't trust multiple un-connected ground electrodes to be the same "zero". At least that is how I understand it.
Yeah, that got me too. I didn't think you could run water and power in the same trench. You and I are in the same area of each other but I guess there's different codes across this country. Still, it sure surprised me when she said both were in the same trench. Yikes!!
