FINISHING REDHEART
GORDON P PATNUDE
I am in the process of making a walking staff for a client.
The wood is Redheart. The final diameter will be about 1 1/2". It will be "decorated" with 3/8" ebony pegs.
I understand that Redheart, and several other exotic hardwoods, will not retain it's fresh-cut color over time after finishing.
I have been considering using one or more coats of red TransTint in clear shellac to dye the wood prior to applying several coats of satin polyurethane.
Have you tested this kind of treatment on woods like purpleheart and other exotic hardwoods that lose the fresh-cut color and turn brown over time??
, but that was not the cause of the darkening.
