I went to an auction yesterday and bought a Shop Fox Radial Drill Press Model W1669. Not sure exactly why I bought it but the radial feature appeals to me. I already have a floor model DP. I bought the floor model fifty years ago because you never know when you might want to drill something really tall. To the best of my recollection I have never used the capacity.

I am considering selling the Shop Fox one. If anyone is interested, let me know. And what do you think of it anyway?

The idea of it is good if you do a lot of angle drilling. I do very little so when I have to, I jig something up to hold the work the way I need it to be held.

I looked at radials when I bought my DP. Since I don't need the angle feature much, I prefer to avoid the resetting for plumb and the likelihood of errors. Doing a jig or and adjustable table vise has been my choice.

I sometimes drill at angles but use an angle vise like this which is good for small things.


If I need something else a fixture is easy to make.

The fact that it made to auction is a good indication of its value and usefulness.

This was a freight auction and there were lots of tools there. A Grizzly 0623X Sliding TX for example. And a Scroll saw and several others. All new and in the box, or what was left of it. This happens occasionally. I passed up a Sawstop TS. Several bandsaws. Wish I had a bigger shop. Just thought this DP might have some capacity my old one does not and it went for decent price.

Those drills are unique, but they are generally not that stable. If you will be drilling with bigger or heavier drill bits, the head won't have the strength to not jiggle around.

Every tool has a good purpose. Just need to make sure you have the right tools for YOUR purposes.
