Are the cracks and splits due to seasonal movement that is likely to continue in the future? If so, will filling them after an extended period of low humidity (forced air heating) be a permanent fix or will extended periods of higher humidity that cause the wood to expand fight with the fill?

This oak had been air drying for at least ten years. I brought it into my semi conditioned shop and trimmed it down and glued two pieces together after flattening them with a router sled. Then flattened the combined two again. This has take a month or more and they seem to be stable.

But, to answer your question, I don't know. We will see.

I have watched over a dozen YouTube video's by at least half a dozen different people. Almost all of them build forms and seal the corners with pure silicone caulk. Most of them spray the forms with silicone mold release spray. Many of them build dams around the pour with painters caulk. I can only think of one that mentioned covering the wood before using the spray. None had any reservations about either of the caulks types.

Also strikes me as odd that "Painters" caulk would have silicone in it if it damages finishes. I know it does on clear finishes but it still seems odd.

Speaking of YouTube...it's hard to find good videos from smart, reliable, experienced people. Many of them are posting their first River table or epoxy pour. Very few have years of experience. I have difficulty believing river tables will hold up over the years.

Bill is absolutely correct! I have personally seen the results of an automobile painted that had been "waxed" with a compound containing Silicone, the car owner did not inform the paint shop! I guess you could call the finish art as it was covered with "fish eyes". Normal cleaning will NOT remove silicone. I personally ban silicone from my workshop. The only place I use the spray is on the rubber seals on my vehicles. It doesn't allow the frost to stick the door closed any more than it stops paint from adhering!

Silicone spray works a treat on snow shovels.

Pledge furniture polish has been banned from my house because it contains silicone to make your furniture feel slippery. Makes finish re-touches impossible.
