You are correct, I was the Engineer over our plants automotive device line. We made millions of parts for GM with a plastic panel and a covering Decal.

Many of the panels were molded with directed light to have a bright area (like light pipes)below transparent areas with lettering or colored as indicators. Some of these were the Cadillac headlight module and the Wiper module. Others were PRDL (console Gear shift indicator) We also produced Wiper switches and many other controls.

Cool! At our plant making 50 of something would be a huge build. We started out making electroluminescent backlit cockpit panels for business jets. Now they make just about every light there is on an aircraft, mainly for business and military jets. Almost all new designs are LED (including landing lights) but still plenty of money is made making the original designs. When the company was young and starting out they tried getting into the automotive industry with electroluminescent products, but it never worked out. Mainly because of the relatively short operating life of EL.
