My guess is that the school district I attended, Robbinsdale MN, class of 1972, wasn;t the only one where a pump handle lamp was the woodshop project in 7th grade. Mine is still around, the cord needs replacing though.
THe picture has three objects.

block of wood with dots in four corners and four irregular blobs
A mystery tool with an iron, thermometer and lever mechanism
My guess...but maybe someone knows for sure...the iron is used to melt the four blobs then the lever presses the molten plastic into the four corners. Its a plastic extruder.
But...maybe it isn't?
