Up until now I've left all my kitchen and bathroom drawer boxes unfinished. ..And I may continue to do that but, I wanted to get advice on a silverware drawer I'm working on now.

This drawer will have a sliding tray that will get much more handling than most drawers and the utensils will have sharp edges and corners. Should I put a finish on the tray (which is ash, while the drawer box is cherry) ?

There will also be some dividers in the bottom part of the drawer, under the sliding tray, for more utensils. Should I finish those ? Should I finish the entire drawer box .. maybe all of them ? ..And with what ?

I would put a film type finish on the tray and also on the drawer box. It makes them easier to keep clean.

I always shellac drawers. Easy to do, looks good. Easy to repair. That said tableware goes in plastic tray for that purpose.

Years ago, the last time I used water-based poly, the Minwax product I used turned ash sort of a greenish-blue. Have they changed their formula to fix that ?

I use shellac on most things unless they will get hard wear.

Bill, how many coats of shellac do you usually use on drawers ? Also, is it pretty benign and not leave any kind of chemical residue on things stored in drawers finished with shellac ?

Clint, as far as you know, is there anything harmful in the Varathane that could migrate to the eating utensils ?

Bill, how many coats of shellac do you usually use on drawers ? first, raises grain and it feels like a porcupine. sand 220, recoat to yield a smooth feel. I apply with a foam brush or it can be sprayed. With spraying, blushing is a problem if humid.

Also, is it pretty benign and not leave any kind of chemical residue on things stored in drawers finished with shellac ? Shellac is used to coat pills. Must be harmless enough to eat then. That said, no finish would present a problem.

I don't think so; I've used it on all of our kitchen drawers with no worry, but the final answer should come from Rust-Oleum. The MSDS doesn't say anything about the cured finish.

Polyurethane is basically a plastic when it cures. I agree that the Varathane floor finish is a good product.
