It is once again my sad duty to let you all know of the passing of one of the true giants of the woodworking world, and one whom I am glad to have known personally for many years. Phil Lowe of the Furniture Institute of Mass (FIM) was a gifted woodworker, turner, scholar, and above all teacher who it is not an exaggeration to say influenced at least two generations of woodworkers, and I expect more as his videos live on . Through his school at Beverly Mass and his many appearances at shows and seminars, and videos, he taught the classical skills of the period furniture makers and also fostered those who were interested in more modern designs. Phil was a truly complete master, from the scale drawings to the carving to the turning and of course the exquisite joinery, and finishing he really could do it all, and did.
He worked with a wonderful upholsterer Joseph Karagagian, who is 20 years my senior and one of my heros in the biz, and Phil often said that he wanted me to take over when Joe retired, which I actually hoped would be a few years from now, but sadly now that will never happen and I really will miss the chance to actually work and teach with Phil. They really don’t make em like Phil anymore…..
At this point I am not aware of the funeral arrangements, or if there will be a request for donations to a specific charity, but if so I will let you know.
