Update on Bridge project, new need

Recall I am project manager for turning this RR bridge into a Rails to Trials.



The bridge will be stripped to steel, ties replaced and a 2 x 6 deck placed on the ties. An engineering firm has prepared the prints which will go for Virginia government approval. This construction is ubiquitous for Rails to Trails bridges in our region. I had no option or motivation to change it.

I found the rail had a host of conflicting constraints. This bridge is high. The rail needed to feel secure so a rail height greater than the code minimum 42" was specified (46"). The rail opening had to be less than 4" and able withstand 200 pounds of vertical or horizontal impact. The rail had to provide a smooth surface to avoid injury from out of control bikers (preteen males)crashing into it. The rail had to dissuade anyone standing or even sitting on it. We had to able able to afford it. It needed to look rustic to go with the spirit of the woodsy trail. Not much design space was left.


I settled on the design shown in this picture. The estimated rail cost will be $96,000, a daunting amount to raise from private donations, but we got there.

Now I have another design need. A road crosses the trail about 400' from the bridge. We need to block vehicle access to the bridge. The trail at this point is 50' across with high banks on either side. The barricade needs to block 50' while allowing bike passage and authorized vehicle passage.

I need an inexpensive, attractive, effective barricade design. Suggestions- cable, chain, gate, other? The rest of the barricade- rocks, ties on end, other? What do you see on trails of this kind?

Yes the bridge steel needs paint. The estimate to paint it is $175,000. Not going to happen until some government with lots of money assumes the trail.

Bill, the Rails to Trails pathway in our town uses spring-loaded posts placed vertically in the center of the trail at road intersections. It's not very wide, so 1 post suffices. I don't see any reason multiple posts couldn't be used. Ranger vehicles and emergency vehicles simply drive over them and they bend over flat. Obviously, they don't actually prevent vehicles from driving on the trail if they decide to ignore the law, but I guess that applies to most any barrier. I'll see if I can find a picture.

Rocks are everywhere I would use big rocks placed about 4 feet apart along either side of a removable post in the center for emergency access. For looks I thing a V shape pointing down the trail would look good. Biggest cost would be moving the rocks and a removable post.

What they use here in my R-T-T are 4" steel posts set 6' apart in, and filled with, crete. The center post is removable; set into 4.25 ID steel sleeves with a lock shackle welded to the base and the post to take a padlock. EV guys have keys to get access. For a 50' width, only the center post needs to be removable.

Widely used on every walking path in every park around here. Usually one in the middle is enough but for wider paths you might need more. Most of those around here look to be home made since they are nothing but heavy-wall steel with the addition of a locking hasp at the bottom to allow for removal and any welding shop could make on in a half hour.

That's what I was about to say - it would be easy to make bollards, posts, swing bars, whatever with the plasma torch and welder. Also, some of the simple stationary security bollards at the gov place where I worked looked like maybe 5-6" sch 80 pipe filled with concrete with the concrete slightly domed on the top, secured who-knows-how-deep in the ground.

Most of the bollards on the walking paths around here appear to be something like 2-1/2 or 3" thick-wall DOM tube set into an appropriate pipe set in concrete. The removable ones aren't concrete-filled for obvious reasons. Some are a bit flimsier than others and an idiot in a Jeep could certainly knock those down but not without some serious denting. Nothing is impervious.

I am surprised a design with low horizontal bars was selected. Most towns would not approve that design for use on a deck. To a 3 year old that design is a ladder.

That design is a tragedy in waiting.

Copy this one does not look like any more materials and not climbable.

Is it rotated 180 degrees for where it could lock? The square post must slip over something underneath?

it's 180 out of phase

It goes into a square sleeve in the ground, the flange is to keep rain and debris out of the hole
