Cutting out the piece for intrasia accurately is critical. A guy who did a presentation on the subject bought an “inexpensive” $3000 laser to do the job. There may be a much less expensive way - devices made by Cricut. With the correct cutting head these things supposedly can cut up to 2.4 mm thick wood veneer. At about $400 for the more expensive model, this could be an intrasian aficionado’s dream come true.
Anyone tried this? If so what results were attained?
I fail to see the point, I do intarsia for the challenge and the self satisfaction of completing a project. I don't sell the things I make , but if you are into sales I could see where it would work for Marquetry pieces to put in a craft booth. But they would still not be "Handmade"
My wife has a Cricut she uses for making cards. I never gave it a thought to use it in the manner you're asking about. Might work but I'm sure not going to find out. I screw her machine up and not only will I get an ear full but probably have to pay for a new one too. Still, it's an interesting idea!
Interesting, but most of the Intarsia I have seen is much thicker than 2.4 mm. Could you the Cricut to cut out patterns and adhere them to wood to be cut on a scroll or band saw and then shape the edges as desired ?
