I am not telephone smart, but I suggest you compare Settings. I recently had a problem with something that worked before, then quit working. Somehow, who knows how, I had set it into Airplane Mode. As I said, I am not telephone smart.

I have no idea...but try shutting both phones completely off (usually by holding the power button down for about 10 seconds) and rebooting them.

As Steve says, try restarting the phone. Mine does this about every month.

A power-off reboot is a lot like combing/brushing your hair. Gotta tidy things up routinely.

Well now I get 1 bar and it disappears. I will be holding both phones and mine will have 2-3 bars and my wife's 1 and it disappears.

Maybe a new phone?

Do you have a metal plate on the back

Do you have metal plates on the back of either phone to hold them with a magnet in the car? If so that might be helping or hurting the signal. The other things might be the way you hold the phones. Switch hands and see. What type phones are they?

Depending on your carrier you may need to update tower settings. With Verizon we had to do that periodically.

Turn them on to airplane mode than turn airplane off. I think this is sort of the same as rebooting as it looks for cell towers.

So I had to go into town to the hardware and I brought both phones. My wife's had 4 bars and I had 2!

I guess the area around our home doesn't like my wife's phone!

Lots of memory leaks and other careless programming. I've been working 20+ years with PC's that will run a year or two between reboots. Just another reason to despise my phone I guess.

It gets a steady stream of new features, but quality is atrocious.

Hard to give advice not knowing anything about phone, carrier and operating system.

Couple of questions here need to be asked. and answered by the OP.

1. are both phones fully charged?

2. what phones are they?

3. what carriers do they connect to?

4. how old are the phones?

5. Have the phones ever worked correctly?

6. If they have then what changed recently?

If the phone is 4G or 5G the bars really don't mean anything. They give an indication of the amount of power the cell site as assigned to that phone at that time. If your wife's phone puts out a little bit more power that yours that can happen. The only real test is if both phones work equally well in a fringe reception area. If your wife's phone doesn't it then has problems.

This really sounds like you have different providers At home one provider has a closer tower and in town the other provider had the closer tower which would explain the differences in signal strength.

My wife and I had different providers and this was a very common situation and I used to say that it was a feature, one phone may not work but the other would if we were out together. Have since changed to the one that gave the best signal at home.
