When it comes to replacement parts I always find the part # on a manufacturer's site and then plug it into Amazon and eBay to check the price. Most times I do a lot better.

We've bought lots of things off Amazon recently and living in a smaller town there often isn't a lot of choices locally. But I do think Amazon purchases suck the life blood out of a lot of local vendors especially in these pandemic times.

If I know I can buy something locally (not from Wal-Mart, but from a local merchant) without spending a half day looking for it, I will gladly do so and gladly pay a little extra for it. Unfortunately, many of the things I buy from Amazon couldn't be found within an hour's drive, so Amazon just makes it so much more convenient, regardless of the price.

Now I'm curious...

Here is an alternate view. I grew on a dairy farm. We sold hundreds of gallons of milk a week. Exceptionally good quality and it was selected to go to a distant processing plant to make ice cream and specialty products. I spoke to Dad about the fact that he basically did not make a point to buy from local stores. His response was, "They never buy anything from me."

FYI, for anyone who doesn't know, uranium ore, before enhancement (concentration) is not highly radioactive.

When I worked at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (doing IT), one staff member used a chunk of ore as a doorstop.

Having said that, it's still not something to eat or be in extended contact with. There are many very ill people here in New Mexico who got that way from working in Uranium mines. Many died.

And, yes, the NRC does monitor the internet to catch people selling stuff they shouldn't.

We used "depleted" uranium metal (U-238 from the tailings of the enrichment process that removes most of the 235 and 234) as shielding for high-radiation Iridium-192 and Cobalt-90 gamma sources used for field radiography.

For shielding, depleted uranium is better than lead being more dense. It does emit a low ionizing radiation, but less than natural. U-235 is the isotope used for fission, about 0.711% of naturally occurring uranium. Naturally occurring uranium ore is an emitter of alpha and gamma but the numbers are quite small. Don't eat or inject it - I don't think it would be useful as coronavirus protection or cure...

Funny uranium story

A mineral collector brought a piece of shiny metal to the lab one day. Said a neighbor gave it to him to see if it was a meteorite. He asked that we analyze it to see if it was Nickel and Iron. We put it in a machine that checks for elements one at a time starting with "light" elements like sodium and going to heavy like lead. When it passed by nickel and iron without registering their presence I became interested to see what it was. When the analysis passed through tin without registering I became really interested for the next to come up are things like platinum, which is what it looked like. Nope. Passed on by platinum, bismuth, lead. I was glued to the machine. The last element to check is uranium and when it got there BINGO. We laid the lab Geiger counter on it and it pegged.

It was wrapped in lead and I called Nuclear Reg. Agency. It was Columbus day and nobody home. I left a message "I have come into possession of tens of grams of Uranium" . Next day at exactly 8:00 the phone rang. "We will be sending someone up from Oak Ridge to retrieve it." They went on to ensure we had it secured safely. They were nice enough to call later to report that it was largely depleted uranium metal, likely stolen from a nearby place that fashioned military stuff from uranium.

Another story. A mineral collector friend in NH collected minerals at the Ruggles mine in NH. He had a stash of uranium minerals stored in an out building. One day he was paid a visit from NRA who asked if he might know why their radioactivity monitoring plane detected a strong signal from his property.
