Klingspor Industrial division has knowledgeable tech service staff. Their field sales people are also experts in the industries they serve. One used to be able to get to these people at 3M but I have not been successful of late. 3M has pushed this function out to their distributors.

I pigment stain most of the furniture I build. Pigment staining demands perfect sanding to achieve perfect staining. I can likely answer most any sanding question you have if it involves sanding to prepare for a finish.

Rule of thumb

My teacher told us all a rule of thumb. "Sand it until you think it is perfect. Inspect it with low angle lights. When you are sure it is perfect that means you are about half way there."

We all did a project with a board where when it was perfect, we put a blue tape down the middle and kept sanding the right hand side of the board. Then we sprayed lacquer on the whole board. The difference was that you might see between a nice finish and a master finish.

The other thing he taught us was to carefully clean off each piece before moving to the next grit, so that you aren't sanding with remnants of a coarser grit. That greatly speeded up the process.

Thank you. I am using a Festool vac and Sander, but I never thought about vacuuming the board between grits.
