Question on Onieda Cyclone

Barry Irby

There is a local tool auction that includes an Oneida 3 HP Cyclone. It appears nearly new with very little use. The auction does not end for several days but the current bid is $55. As near as I can tell the machine retails for about $3500. I am wondering about buying it. I have a cheap single bag unit now.

Any advice? What's a good price? Anyone else interested if I am not?

Barry:

I can't give specifics, but I'd certainly buy for $55, or even $550 - but not $5500.

At $1000 this is likely a bargain, assuming there is more than the cyclone there - the frame, motor, impeller, bin, bag or filter.... etc. If you have model # or specs you can compare to what Oneida is offering today, and anything less than half of new is likely a good buy (in my view). If it were in NC or close by, I would be interested.

Agree with what Henry posted. if you can get the specifics and contact Oneida about the unit.

As an aside, my 2 HP (maybe 3??) Oneida cyclone with a filter is about 20 years old and still goin' strong. keep your use of flex plastic pipe to a minimum and don't scrip on blast Gates. I have a 55 gallon fiber drum for the chips and when running the planer and jointer it will fill up fast. A remote on/off is very handy and well worth the cost. I have a Super Dust Gorilla Oneida cyclone w/ a 30 gallon metal drum.

As I remember, I paid less than $2k for it and the metal ducting - but that was 13 years ago. The 3 HP unit you are referring to is probably a newer model - and not quite as old as mine.

IMO, if it is little used, it would be easily worth up to $1K - but I like Oneida and have been quite happy w/ mine. A new spun-bond filter isn't that expensive if you need to replace the filter.

Barry,

I have a 2HP Oneida with a Baldor motor and I LOVE it. Suggest trying to get any piping that may be offered with it too, as that can easily come up to the cost of the unit itself.

I ordered my piping from Oneida, and blast gates from somewhere else. Since I can weld, I also made my own reducers to make the connection to the hoses. I also used 6" hose for all major tools to help keep the air volume up. Don't think you can use HVAC piping as it comes from the home center. It will get sucked flat almost immediately. Oneida techs can assist with designing a layout for you.

If you are at all wondering if you really need this, the answer is YES. A DC is the most run motor in the shop by far. It is a wise move to get a good unit such as the one you are looking at.

If you come up with it I can send you some pics of how I laid things out. Also ways of lowering the cost of the ducting.

Good Luck!

Grant, this shop appears to be one that maybe someone retired, bought a shop full of nice stuff and used it little if at all. The dust collector is standing in a corner in the picture and appears to have had no use. In fact, there is another corner with ducting standing there and a pile of fittings, none of which appears to have been used. I hope to get a in person view in the next day or two.

One problem I have is I have a small shop and no place to put this. My current unit is in an outside closet that is much too short for this unit. This unit is much nicer and more powerful than my current unit so I am trying to workout how to use it.

Hello, I have that same model in use in home shop for about six years, works very good, strong suction. I piped mine up with six inch pvc, no problems at all. If you buy it check the area for a angle iron frame that is used to mount it to the wall, probably about four feet or so square. I think the filter I bought was around two hundred dollars. Good Luck

Gosh Barry, this sounds like a steal. I have a 25 year-old Onieda that has been a work-horse. Not nearly as sophisticated (nor as convenient to clean) as the newer models, but it has been super and sure has met my needs as a hobbyist. You said "no place to put it". If so, at that price, you could sell it and make a nice profit. As an option, maybe raise the roof on your outdoor closet to accommodate? Let us know what you do. Jim

The price....

Barry Irby

The price is currently at $55, but there are about four days to go. Some of you may know, 90% of the bidding will happen in about the last 20 minutes. I have no idea what the final bid will be, but I expect it will be 20 times higher than now.

I am glad to hear favorable comments on the DC. I think it would please me if someone here spoke up and wanted it. I am not sure I want to put the money and effort into it and would be pleased if someone on Wood Central got it.

Barry,

Units such as these move a LOT more air than the average small DC. Your outdoor cabinet might work to make it easier to empty the bin. Assuming you have an enclosed cooled and heated shop means you will most likely want the filter to at least return inside your shop to prevent any conditioned air from being wasted by being sent outside. I think you already know that, but wanted to be sure.

The larger units such as I think you are describing don't make a whole lot of noise, more of a low roar with no high pitched noise. Given a good quality filter, I would put it inside. Mine is mounted on the wall with the bin beneath it in a corner. The filter occupies the space above the end of my lathe. A clamp rack sits behind the DC on one side so I was able to use the wall space.

My advice is to try to get both the ducting and the unit, as they are comparable in terms of cost. My 2HP unit begins at the DC with 7" piping, then separates to 6" at the first wye. Everything from there to the blast gates is 6". I then ran 6" flex to unisaw, bandsaw, miter saw with hood, 8" jointer, drum sander, and router table and lathe. One more 6" is necked down to 4" with a 15' hose for cleanup and to provide DC to my drill press. None of my machines were modified from their 4" original ports, as that very short circle doesn't slow down the air very much.

FWIW,

I've been running a 2HP Oneida in my shop for 15 years. It makes less noise than my shopvac. Wouldn't be without one.

But, is there a problem with your current system that you are looking to fix? What would the advantage of the Oneida be? How much would it be worth to solve that problem? That's your price, unless the bidding gets real close to retail price.

And definitely get the pipes, blast gates, fiber drum, any accessories. If you buy the machine.

I hope you or someone else on WC is able to get this at a good price. I put an Oneida cyclone (known to my kids as the yellow monster) in my basement shop over 10 years ago and it has made the environment down there much better - no piles of dust/chips on the floor, better air quality, and less complaining about dust from the guy that does the annual maintenance on our boiler . Now if I could just get off my lazy duff and finish the drop for the floor sweep...

Re: Question on Onieda Cyclone

What I don't know....

Barry Irby

is what this unit would do for me that the one I have now won't do. I have one of those cheap single bag units and it is outside in a closet. So no issue with the filter, anything that gets past the filter is outdoors. I live alone, so noise is not an issue. I perceive this as a bargain, but a bargain I don't need is not a bargain at any price.

I need to get off my lazy duff...

Barry Irby

and use up some of this giant pile of wood I have. Instead of a floor sweep, I connect a 4" hose to mine and use it like a giant shop vac. Not much actual sweeping involved.

From what I can tell this unit is like new and I would like to see someone at WC get it as well. Bidding ends on the thirtieth so it has been static for a day or two. The action will occur in the last hour.

How is the auction going?

Re: Question on Onieda Cyclone

Barry Irby

The auction is over. I texted with someone else here and his assessment was similar to mine. $500 would have been irresistible but $1000 would be marginal. I bid it up to $850 plus 21% in fees and let it go. It finally sold for about $950 plus the 21%. I think that would have been a good deal for someone who needed it and had a good place for it. I doubted it would do a great deal better than what I have now and would have required some significant set up and reconfiguration of my shop to make it functional, so I let it go. I would like to have seen someone form Wood Central get it.

Due to a change in my shop, I have a 5hp cyclone if anyone is interested, that is built from plans on Bill Pentz web site a few years ago. Works great for my one man hobby operation, but had to upgrade for two people now at times. It includes wall mount bracket and new filter and is single phase. I would like $750...no tax or 21% buyers premium. 701-4zero3-90one9

Re: unit for sale?

Henry (Raleigh NC)

Butch

If you were closer to NC I'd be all over this - depends on details of course.

Post your DC system as for sale here in the WC classified - that won't get buried in an individual post here on the board.

Details on the model, your general location, and the sale price make for the best classifieds. These are the first questions people will ask, so provide them upfront.
