What products can I use to bleach red oak? Is there a stain that you might recommend that naturally does that? Has anyone had experience with Bona Nordic seal? Thank you!

I’m looking to match my white oak floors that are in the living room with the newly installed red oak floors. I’m just trying to get rid of some of the red tone and make it look like the white oak without it being the color white if that makes sense. Is there a stain that does that? Or maybe a stain that would make the white oak look more like the red oak?

Try wiping it down with ammonia. This will often take out the red and make the oak more brown. you might have to do this several times to get what you want.

On the color wheel, green knocks out red. I did a job for a doctors office that wanted end tables made of red oak, but didn't want the pink tone. Tried to convince them to use white oak, but wouldn't. So I had the paint store mix up a really thin green stain so it would mainly just stay in the pores. I presented a finished sample and they loved it. I know, hard to image green stain, but when I had my business I did some crazy things to make money!

the red will sun bleach over time but the texture difference will be obvious for ever.

I replaced a chair rail on a treasured family piece. Initial color had too much red. Sprayed a light coat of dilute shellac with added Transtint Green - tada! That was was all it took to knock out the red and harmonize colors. Easiest color match I every did - which I don't generally consider an easy task.
So in the finishing of red oak, use a base layer with some green as Dick suggests; it works.

the red photo bleaches? In my experience the reds eventually change to brown. I have a red oak chest that sits on a white oak floor and after 10 years the color is the same for both.
