I had a tree fall on my garage last March. Servpro came and packed everything up and took it to storage while I had trusses up replaced. I have 10 of the metal bins with little drawers full of different size nuts bolts screws etc. When they brought them back every one of them had been stored flat on their backs, and turned over at least once trying to figure out which way they went. I spent three days trying to organize them again, before I just put all the stuff into recycle. I guess like it Never Even Happened pledge didn't hold true for me.

Both of those are sad. Horrifying.

I was telling my young 20 something friend that I have stopped keeping all the left over stuff and making labels and putting into storage at my shop, now I just take it back to Lowe's or where ever and let them store it for me. His probably infinitely more practical answer was "I just throw it all away."

For a few moves I used those and developed a very strict method of packing and shipping. Saran wraps and a sheet of plywood on he drawer side

I found a cabinet with metal drawers about 2x4x5. eight rows, 12 wide

That was fine...until the lifetime of sorted 5/16" plus standard and metric tipped..tipped over..dumped. Some stayed in the drawers but now I have about 4 gallons of bolt salad. The next time I move I'll have a garage sale and they'll go.

Now the nuts and bolts are bolted down...or...'stored at Home Depot'

I did that recently with a a nicely organized box of all my Dremel bits, diamond hones, carbide cutters, grinding wheels, ack. I learned from that not to put such a box in a precarious place.

Reminds me of a scene at the drags at Martin MI about 1974 or so. A race team had a big tool box sitting on the open tailgate if their pickup truck -- the tow vehicle for their dragster. After the race cars made the pass, the driver of the pickup truck made a quick start to go recover their car, and the toolbox toppled off the tailgate just before the starting line (in those days the tow vehicles drove down the racing surface to get to the top end of the track). The track officials turned the tool box upright, dragged to the side of the staging area, and tools went into whatever spot they landed at.

This reminds me of how our Parish Priest sorts collections, Monday morning.

Once out of the envelopes, everything gets tossed into the air. God keeps all the things that remain suspended.

Everything else goes to gutters, AC, heat and lights.

I had a similar, though smaller-scale disaster. I have a large tool chest for my automotive tools. It is packed to the brim. It’s the size that, when fully loaded, is heavy enough that I can only carry it about 20 feet, and I’m fairly fit and strong. Anyway, it locks the drawers when the top lid is shut, and it can then be padlocked, but I never do because it lives in my garage. I took it to a friend’s house to help on a vehicle, and he lives down a long, pot-hole-ridden gravel lane. I left in a little bit of a hurry, not minding the pot-holes, or the fact that the bouncing and jarring would be enough for the lid to pop up and the drawers to open. The tools had been neatly arranged in the drawers...I’m not convinced everything made it home due to the toolbox’s proximity to the bent tailgate of my truck at the time (2” gap in the center at the bottom of the shut tailgate).

I drive out of my neighborhood about a mile to a stop light and Home Depot is about half a mile to the left and Lowe's is about half a mile to the right. Not to mention Sherwin Williams and Chick fil la.

At the beginning of the pandemic lockdown I bought six of the large multi-compartment parts boxes from HF with thoughts that I'd finally make time to sort everything logically. Now my entire shop looks a lot like your photo even though all of the compartments in all of the boxes seem to be full.

Not as exciting as...
