Double ended block plane questions

A friend gave me a Double ended block plane. I did not know they existed and it took me a few minutes to figure out that it was double ended.

It appears parts have been interchanged or lost. The lever cap (?) does not appear original. The one on it has the key hole shaped hole, but there is not corresponding screw. It does have the little locking lever but I don't think that should be there. It is not marked Stanley, but it appears similar to the No. 130 or 131.

Any advice on where to find out more and perhaps where to get restoration parts. This thing is pretty rusty. Would it be better to clean it up or leave it alone?

I have two, a Stanley 130 and a Millers Falls 68.

The MF only has the ID on one side of the body.

Pretty sure mine is cobbled together. I have the body, but not either of those you show and a blade and cap iron that appear to belong to some sort of Stanley block plane. The blade I have is very thin and has an elongated hole and three slots.

It actually is nice. And funny. He is a car guy and knows nothing about WW tools. I gave him some body & fender tools I had no use for and he returned the favor by giving me his father's plane. He is rummaging for the correct parts.

I have no idea who thought this was a good idea. It's a block plane and bull nose plane combined. Mine is not a masterpiece of plane making. I thought if it were a collectable I might sell it to someone that appreciated it more than I did and give the money to my friend. As it is, I assume it's worthless except for the sentimental value and the small value it might have as a curiosity.

Barry, that double-ended block plane belongs to a select group of planes that were lemons. At the top of that list is the Stanley #75 ...

I must admit that I feel this way about most bullnose planes. The toe is too long to get into a corner, and too short for registration.

I asked my Father-in-Law a similar question when I was helping him replace beautiful wood windows with stained glass transoms with aluminum garbage that was common in the early eighties in Canada.

"To make money" was his response.
