Yow, never saw this detail before. All in white oak, too. I'm sure the place needs big-time maintenance, but what a bargain for somebody.

How did you happen to stumble on this?

My cousin still lives in Quincy, and she posted this on Facebook. Quincy had few good memories for my Mom, lots of siblings and raised by an abusive single mother. She moved out at the age of 14 and we only returned to visit her sister. But being a Mississippi River town there were a lot of barons in the day.

Interesting and definitely quirky. I've certainly never seen anything vaguely similar. I kept looking at it and found something unsettling and it took me quite a while to realize that the "newel post" in the center wasn't. Centered that is. And for some reason that matter of a few inches set my nerves on edge. Of course it might just be a matter of the angle of the photo but it seems as though that post should be pointing directly at the "key" at the top. Or is that a capital? Who knows with such a feature...

I mainly think about making that fit up between the volute and the post with the two casings. Cutting those with a handsaw and shooting with a hand plane would not have been something for the apprentice! Another thing that caught my eye was the curved leaded glass panels in the turret windows. Just wonderful details all around the place.

Spectacular house...but what really floored me was the price...$229,900 with a huge piece of land on a beautiful street. I can't even buy a tear-down crack-house grow-op for that amount of money around here.

With the exception of Chicage, and maybe a few other of the larger cities, that’s how the Midwest prices out for homes. Get away from any city, and you can get 2500 s.f. on a few acres for $250k in a lot of places.
