Ash is a pioneer tree where I live. When part of our farm when feral before we bought it what sprouted in the barrens was ash. The growth rate here is high and these sprouts were seed bearing in 10 years. The seeds blow great distances and they are successful sprouting if there is adequate light. In out forests, stands of ash are found in what was former marginal farm land decades ago before returning to the wild. Unlike the chestnut, I think ash would come back successfully if there was resistance.

We had hundreds of ash die on our timber lands and farm. I have noticed how some trees struggled on longer than others. Young trees seem able to survive for as long as we have had the borer- about 3 years.

That is so interesting. I didn't realize the emerald ash borer larvae made such wide, "squiggly", tunnels. No wonder the trees don't have a chance. Kudos to the researchers devoted to finding a solution.
