A word of caution... I live in an area where cottonwood is abundant, but don't know anyone who makes furniture out of it. The wood is not high quality. Its soft, often has mushy spots, and is notorious for splits. Its not unusual for us to be awakened in the middle of the night by a thud produced by a huge branch that just decided to break off and fall. We use it for firewood if there is nothing better around.

I'm not sure it would work well as a seat, especially when shaped thin in some spots.

But if you are ever in New Mexico, there are huge piles waiting by most any roadside free for the taking.
