Just watch a Laura Kampf video on making a "perfect table top".

She took wane edged boards and stacked them so they over lapped, hot glued them together in pairs and bandsawed through them to cut away the wane edges. Intentionally cut curves around the ragged edges. Pealed off the offending edges on each piece and put the meat of the boards back together and glued them up.

So the joints were rather serpentine. Did not show them up close so I suspect they were not really tight.

Is there any chance this would work and make excellent joints?

Wouldn't the curve be off by the width of the kerf? I made some clipboards decades ago by sawing curves like that and put a contrasting strip of wood the width of the kerf. But may not have her technique figured out correctly. Edit; I watched the video and took a screen shot after she cut the end flush. You can see a gap in the seam quite clearly. That's a fresh cut from a Festool track saw, the cutoff is laying on the table in the foreground.

If one could get the joint nice and tight, I suppose it would increase the joint area and make for a slightly stronger joint over straight. But given that a well executed straight joint is plenty strong enough, and this one sounds pretty hard to execute tightly, I just don't see the advantage.

Also doesn't sound like its to my taste, so maybe that's part of my skepticism.

the radii will be in error by the blade width. On a large radius curve the error might not result in a large gap. But stepping back, what is the purpose of this joint beyond trendy?

Such joins were the focal point of my Grandkid's crib. The joint edges in the center-piece were "cleaned" and squared with a spindle sander, then the outer sections were bandsawed to match within a 16th.

Both joint faces were slotted with a router then the joins were filled with loose tenons. Glued up and any gaps were filled with epoxy.


INMHO, for such joints, hairline seams are a useless goal, and the tenons are required for real strength anyway. I used tinted epoxy which accentuated the serpentine lines.

Works fine for panels. That really looks great.

I've done 'sympathetic edges' with a router, calculating offsets to make up for the different radii. Will sometimes route down to the last 1/8th inch or so and cut the rest of the band saw, then clean up with a flush trim bit. But that's mostly for safety and to avoid awkward router cuts that can easily go wrong.

But as pointed out above, its a lot of work and you need to really like the appearance to make it worth while.

A question Clint...

Clint, I like that. How old is it? I am wondering how the joints between the wood and the resin is holding up? If it works for this it might work for a river table. I am skeptical.

Sympathetic sawing is a centuries old technique

I know carpenters used it with hand saws, and I think it was common in the boat construction too. When two boards butted together had a large gap, it was common to use a handsaw and saw down the crack. A little was taken off both boards and then they were tight after the cut.

Barry, there's no resin. The gaps are just gaps of about 1/4" .

I used to do a lot of complimentary curves; rough cut with a bandsaw, finished with a router, flush cut bit and precision jig. You will not get an "accurate" fit with the bandsaw technique because as mentioned the curves will be off by the kerf of the sawblade.

I made hundreds or these card boxes, some with the stripe, which is made offset so the thickness varies.
