Thunderbird email transfer to WIN 10 computer

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

I am moving from to a new WIN 10 computer. I have failed to be able to move my email. Tried direction found on Internet copying "Thunderbird" file from "Roaming" and only a few recent emails are copied. Bought a program to do it and it came with no instructions on how to use it. Made some guesses and that failed as did all attempts to contact the company by phone or email. Hours spent in frustrating failure.

Maybe time to quite Thunderbird for something better documented?

did you try this....?

Click on the menu button Fx57Menu , then go to Help and select Troubleshooting Information.

Click on Open Folder. Your Thunderbird profile folder will open in Windows Explorer.

Close Thunderbird.

From your Thunderbird profile folder, go up three levels.

Right-click on the Thunderbird folder, and select Copy.

Go to the drive you are using to transfer your data, then right-click inside the drive, and select Paste.

On your destination computer, right-click on your backup Thunderbird folder, and select Copy.

Open Thunderbird, and close the account setup window if it appears.

Click on the menu button Fx57Menu , then go to Help and select Troubleshooting Information.

Click on Open Folder. Your Thunderbird profile folder will open in Windows Explorer.

Close Thunderbird.

From your Thunderbird profile folder, go up three levels.

Right-click inside the folder, and select Paste.

When prompted, choose to replace your current data.

I don't have Thunderbird, and leave most of the technical stuff to my IT son, but usually transfer of data from old to new machine involves his external drive.

Lots of videos on YouTube, some good some bad, on the exact subject.

Unlimited data plans help to ferret out the useful ones.

Most of them transfer the Thunderbird profile and data on old machine to a USB stick and install it on the new one.

In general, all my inboxes on various email accounts actually live on the provider's servers and what I have on my local machines are copies. When you get a new machine you should just need to install whatever email client you prefer, then connect it to the provider's server (which I have not always found to be a trivial operation), and then it will make a local copy of your current inbox. My work account must have 40 subfolders for the inbox, a real pain to duplicate with changing client machines.

So I don't think you need to physically move all the files from one machine to another like you would your photo collection. Even photos can work the same way if you use remote hosting services either by choice or provider diktat (thanks a bunch google).

I've done it a few times without a glitch -- basically it entails moving your current profile to the new computer and then telling TB on the new machine to use that instead of whatever it currently thinks it should. It has become so automatic for me that I don't even think about the steps involved. Maybe if you went over to news.mozilla.org and asked for detailed steps in the mozilla.support.thunderbird someone could give you better help. I'm also certain that in the TB's online help this must be answered innumerable times since it such a common activity.

Tried referenced procedure many times unsuccessful

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

Either I am not following the directions accurately or there is some issue moving from a Win7 machine to Win 10. Only a few emails show up in the new machine and no address book.

Re: Tried referenced procedure many times unsucces

Is there some detail not described in Mozilla instructions that results in success? I have uninstalled Thunderbird on new computer, reinstalled and tried it with same failure. New Thunderbird fires up, loads a few emails , then goes to Earthlink and loads emails stored there that didn't move over. No address book, Trash, Archives etc.

I have deleted "Thunderbird" file from "Roaming" and pasted transfer with no success.

Following directions it seems to work. I get query whether to overwrite files on new computer and say yes, so it seems to be proceeding as it should but the result is failure.

Here's what I did that worked

Lee Schierer in McKean, PA

If you open thunderbird and right click on the inbox, then select properties, it will give you the file name and path to all your incoming emails. Copy that folder to a jump drive. Do the same with any folders you saved messages to. Then in your windows 10 device go tot he same file location and replace the existing inbox with the file from your old computer. Do the same for any other folders you wish to move. You should have all your existing emails.

You can export your address book by opening the address book, click on tools and select export. Save the file to your jump disk and then go to the new thunderbird and import the file using the import option in the address book tools.

partial success and thank you

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

I don't know how to do what is in your 1st paragraph but my son in law probably does. I'll have him attempt when we get through the virus. He has a work and life style that almost assures he will bet infected unless he is vaccinated first. He is currently banned from our house.

I was able to copy the Address book and that is by far the most critical need. I have it on a USB drive. It seems to be in an Excel file. I can retrieve address from this file by visual inspection. Unsure how to get this file into new Thunderbird. If I select Import will Thunderbird somehow find it on the new computer desk top?

Bill, I've used Thunderbird since it it was split from Mozilla or Seamonkey.

It is possible to move your mailboxes but it is a somewhat involved process, I've done it several times over the years. I use Linux, so it's a little different than Windows.

I found these instructions online and they seem the correct one.

Good luck!

There's an extension available for Thunderbird to do just that. It's called ImportExportTools NG. Some functions are labeled experimental. I've used it (or its predecessor) in the past and it did what it was supposed to do. I exported/imported my profile. I'm a Linux user, haven't used Windows to any extent since XP so I'm not much help there.
