For a 1/2" gap, I'd use stucco.

I should have said, that there is Wood Stucco Molding on one side. Who ever put in a New Door did a Lossy Job!

If you want to caulk a 1/2" crack you should get some 5/8 or 3/4" backer rod and stuff it into the crack so it is about a 1/4" below the surface and then caulk with excellent caulk such as Thiokol or Pecora and create a seam that would be shaped like a bowtie in cross section.

If this is a modern latex product (eifs)that is made to look old fashion stucco you need to very careful there are thousands of building with hidden leaks rotting and molding all over the country.
If you have an eifs home you need to inspect and recaulk ever gap annually all 10,000 feet of joints.

Or bridge the gap with J-trim and have two thin caulk beads.
Looks neater.
PS. Trying to post a pic but getting the @?(*&?% !! "Limit in KB is 100" message.

Here's a fast way to do it. You just need to be a stucco master to get the uniform.
