I've seen some gizmos that work with an app on a smart phone to give the phone x-ray vision. It seems fantastic...but I'm suspicious.

If I see another ad I'll drop it into this thread.

The most reliable stud finder I've found is a stack of little rare earth magnets. You take one between your finger tips and slide it around on the wall and it will stick to a screw. There is no question you are on a stud. 10 magnets for less than $3 at Harbor Freight and they work great.

I bought this stud finder for my son who has been doing a lot of renovation work in his old house. He told me later it worked great and continues to use it. I ordered it from Lee Valley. The price is good.

I have a stud finder that is at least forty years old. All the labels have fallen off it and I have no idea what brand it is, but it still works and is OK, but the magnets are better. The y also work great for finding the nails in hardwood flooring if you have to cut into that. Just roll them gently down the seams and they stop on the nail.

I think the "X-ray" vision one only works on Android phones. Double check.

A refinement to this: Use a plastic sandwich bag with magnet inside. Easier to cover a larger area.

I like the magnet idea but the stud finder can demarcate the edges of the stud. I have a B&D stud finder that also generates a red level line. Works great.
