Veneering drawer fronts

Hello all:
I am applying a camphor burl veneer to some very short drawers or trays. The bank of 4 drawers will be 4" high, each drawer being 1" high. I've cut the drawer fronts to be 1 1/16" to allow for getting the reveal correct. If all goes well, the drawer fronts will end up at 1".
The issue comes in determining when to apply the veneer. I can apply a single sheet of the veneer to the separate drawer fronts at one time, thereby ensuring that each drawer front has aligned veneer patterns. I will insert thin spacers between each drawer to allow the veneer to be cut between the drawer fronts. In this case, the drawer fronts will be planed after veneer has been applied.
Alternatively, I can cut the veneer into strips and apply it after the drawers are fitted, using centerlines and alignment marks to get the pattern aligned. Either of these options will work, I think.
In your opinion, which will provide a more certain result?
