Essential screwdriver

Bill Tindall, E.Tn.

When it comes to screwing tops to case pieces there is usually limited room on top of the screws to accommodate a conventional screwdriver. I do not know where I obtained this ratchet but it is perfect for the task of driving square head screws through frames and into tops. It has a male and female 1/4" square drive that accepts either a socket or a screwdriver bit.

Shown is using it to fasten top to table currently underway.....and done at last.

Thank You Bill,

I had a small ratchet but misplaced it and I too am securing top on a dresser from a tight underside. I found one and ordered from Amazon - Thanks

Yeah. I have one of those. Actually I probably have at least three of them but they seem to keep disappearing over the years. None of mine are as pretty as yours -- just the cheap sort that get the job done.

After a couple of the cheap ones broke over time, I bought a hex drive ratchet from Mac Tools (respected among auto mechanics) that is even more compact. All it takes is hex drive bits, without the square drive, and it tucks into mighty tight spots. I expect it will last me the rest of my working-on-stuff years.

On a couple of occasions when I’ve been doing kitchen islands that others designed there would be a situation arise where the sink would of course be centered, but due to DW and trash bins not being the same size, we might end up with a 4” door with drawer over. I usually suggest a knife drawer where it’s a big block with slits for the blade. If I knew all this on the front end I’d mount hardware before assembling the boxes. Plus some changes call for drastic measures. By mounting a drill extension or two between an impact driver and the bottom end of this thing, I’ve been able to reach in at arms length to drill and drive screws where there wasn’t enough room to work my wrist.

I’ve used it to work deep on my truck engine As well.

Here is a small ratchet bought at the blue big box store with my Christmas loot card. Comes with a bunch of Torx and misc bits. Just realized when I took the pic I need to cut down a square drive bit to match the length of the others and toss in the pack. 1/4 hex one one side and 5/16" on the other.

I get a lot of use out of these. Also, the 'wobble' extension set too. Sometimes there isn't room to swing the ratchet handle. http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/sockets-ratchets/3-piece-thumbwheel-ratchet-set-94011.html http://www.harborfreight.com/wobble-socket-extension-set-9-pc-67971.html?_br_psugg_q=wobble+extension
