Lacquer finish question

Barry Irby

Using Sherwin Williams CAB lacquer.

Is two heavy coats as good as four thin ones? If I spray a level surface like a table top with a couple of heavy coats, and they melt together, why is it better to use three or four thinner coats that melt together?

That is a commercial finish. It will have application instructions . Presume whoever developed the application instructions did thorough testing and found them optimal.

That was my go-to sealer and finish until recent switch to Target waterborne. The question of two vs. four is irrelevant. Depending on the degree of reduction, the number of coats is simply that which results in the desired build. Also affected by the spraying protocol.

You're fine. I apply lacquer, including the SW CAB, with an airless sprayer, where I can simply 1-coat it by default. You'll actually get better leveling and finish with a heavy coat.
