Squirrel in the shop

CJ in MPLS

The other day my dog chased something that squeaked into the garage. I only saw this from the corner of my eye. I thought that the dogs quarry left with the dog, but from the rodent footprints and keen and continued interest of the dog, I believe I have a new shop friend. I kind of prefer the larger spiders to the squirrel. At least they tend to stay in their webs and as long as I check the ear muffs and dust mask before putting them on, I am rarely surprised. The jack in the box tension combined with the odor of squirrel urine has put me off a bit this morning. ;)

I had a squirrel in my shop a long time ago. There was a very large maple tree that overhung my driveway and the squirrels used to jump to and from it to the house's roof. One day I was in the shop/garage doing something and had the garage door open for ventilation when suddenly I heard a bang and turned to see a squirrel bounce off the hood of my old Dodge pickup and into the garage. I don't know who was more startled, me or the squirrel. Luckily for both of us he shook if off after a few seconds and took off into the yard. I figure that the rodent had misjudged a jump right before his 15-foot dive. Now I find myself feeding the squirrels (and chipmunks) for company and entertainment but I'm still not inviting them into the house although a couple of times one has made a dive for a peanut in my hand at the patio door and just might have become a housemate.

They work reasonably well.

Trapped many a flying squirrel with them.

Ill trade shopemates with you,

Last week, I picked up a rag from the floor, and under it was the smallest snake I’ve ever seen. It was so tiny that it seems harmless. What bothers me is that it’s mom is probably not far away.

Well, almost all snakes are harmless. And useful to boot. I seldom see any snakes around my property except for the occasional ringneck, almost always less than 8" for some reason although I know that there must be adults around somewhere. I sometimes wonder if they are feeding on the numerous 5-line skinks that always seem to be around.

Years ago I had some antique furnirure in the shed waiting for restoration. A squirrel got into the shed and over the winter did some chewing damage. I don't know whether it was eating or sharpening it's teeth but it did do damage. I would get a Have A Heart trap, trap it and release it 10 to 15 miles away from your shop.

In NJ, it's illegal to transport squirrels off of the property where you caught them.

At my house they die of lead poisoning and leave in the trash, so I am not technically violating that law, the trash company might be.

I toss them out in the field, where the buzzards get a free lunch. The executioner went over the Rainbow Bridge last fall, so now I catch them in a havaheart baited with peanuts and drown them.
