I would not use eastern red cedar. Too much oil and the smell could last for weeks.

As far as your editing question; I don't see a Mike L in the member profiles. Did you change your log in?

You will have to either go back to identifying yourself as "Dustmaker Mike" or enter a new profile as "Mike L". Use the "My Profile" link at the bottom of the message.

It doesn't hurt much to make a new profile, as almost no one enters any meaningful information into their profile anymore. To my way of thinking though, that practice is a substantial loss to the WoodCentral sense of Community. For example, when someone asks a question of us, it could be very helpful if we could easily look up the part of the world where they live, instead of posting a question in response asking where they live, or providing an answer that couldn't possibly relate to their current situation. You definitely do not need to be so specific as to identify your zip code or street address or latitude and longitude specific to degrees, minutes and seconds. We could find useful your state or province and an indication of truly rural, small town, big city, or major metropolitan area, however. For example, I provide the following location information: "on the Cohansey, half hour south of NJTP Exit 1." While that might be more detail than some people would be comfortable revealing, the New Jersey exit code I use is regarded by most people who understand the code as pure fantasy, or in the words of Click and Clack, "You can't get there from here in Joisey."

When you build the bird house keep in mind an annual cleaning of the inside of the bird house is best practice so make it easy to clean and get the hole size correct.
