Dust masks

The flimsy masks that are currently available don't really work for sanding dust.

I have a limited stash of N95 masks that I am holding in reserve.

I have an older organic vapor/particulate 3M mask that works fine for spraying and such - but is way too hot for sanding.

I read about the Elipse masks and decided to try one.

Highland Woodworking (among others) sells the Elipse P100 dust mask.

A lot more comfortable than the 3M. The exhalation valve means you can use it

for being around people - but I only wanted it for the shop.

A reasonable, comfortable mask. The medium/large fits me quite well.

When I find a mask I like, I always purchase replacement filters.

Elipse refills have been "temporarily not available" for over six months at LeeValley.

On several respirators we use a piece of tape inside effectively disables the exhalation valve.

Read the sizing directions carefully. It’s your neck size, not your hat. I wear mine to the store because it fasteners around the neck with a coffee filter inside. Ear loop masks are a serious hazard to my hearing aids.

Don't mean to come off like a smart a$$ but I don't use or need a mask when sanding. I use two different Festool sanders connected to one of their vacuums and there is no dust to deal with. Think what you may but there simply is no dust from sanding. If there were my sinuses would go crazy or I would see signs of it on horizontal surfaces.

I live in Mechanicsville, VA (not far from Richmond) and I've been building furniture and cabinetry for well over 20 years now. It all started with my frustration of not being able to cut a straight line with a hand saw. About this same time, a guy named Norm appeared on my local PBS station. The more I watched, the more I learned. I also started thinking, "Hey, I can do that"! And so, I began with small projects and soon found myself moving up to increasingly advanced work. Word of mouth started the ball rolling and before I knew it, I was building all kinds of things for people. While this is not what I do to pay the bills, it has provided me with a means of equipping my shop over the years. The main downside to all of this is when my wife looks at a finished project and says, "I want one of those" and I know I don't have the time to make that happen right then. I take advantage of any slack time between commissions to work on things we want and this seems to keep her "on my side". She even surprised me one day with a new Tormek sharpening system. Sometimes it pays to leave that tool catalog lying around open! For me, woodworking is a type of therapy. I can go out to the shop and totally forget about the world outside. There have been days when I get out there early and before I know it, it's dark outside and I have no idea where the time went! I also enjoy challenging my skills and learning new things. Most of the time, since the majority of my work tends to be custom pieces, I'm working on projects I�ve never built before. While this takes me longer than if I were doing production work, I find it more appealing because there's always something new to learn. I haven't had any formal training in woodworking. My teachers have been experience, the many books and magazines I've read, WoodCentral, and of course, a guy named Norm.

Yup, they are that good. Any time I see dust on a workpiece I know that either the bag is "hard as a brick" full or the hose is clogged.

I wear a RZ and hadn't thought about covering the flap or using a coffee filter. The mask with the open filter protects me but not others so I'll give it a try. I don't see how it is going to protect the idiots that wear their mask on their chin hanging around their neck or just over their mouth. In theory if everyone wore a good mask properly there shouldn't be any worries about exhale flaps because everyone would be protected by their own mask.
