I have a cherry tree with a rather large (2-3 ft) burl. it is approximately 2 ft high. i have 2 pics but can include them in this text. how do i go about determining the value of this burl? thanks Dick

IMO, just like cows on the hoof, cats in a bag, above ground pools with "you disassemble" clauses, heavy furniture in basements, burls attached a tree have no value.

Best way to evaluate value is to list it for sale on a wood site as a “best offer sale”, or put it on eBay. There are as many burls that have a rotten center as those which don’t.

It's a tough call. People probably won't take a chance on buying a pig in a poke. If you cut it up into proper blanks and dip them all in paraffin, *and* the figure is wonderful (not all burls are as dramatic or interesting as you'd like), you might be able to sell them to members of a local turning club or AAW chapter for a decent buck, but that's a lot of work with no guarantee of a return. When we used to run woodworking consumer shows, specialty vendors were charging, say, $50 for a 3x8x8 or a 6x6x6 blank of highly figured and/or exotic wood. That was 25 years ago, so adjust for inflation.
