I am working on a fall front door design for a coin chest. The door will fold down and slide under a bank of drawers in the same way that a some Gerstner tool chests do. I've purchased a set of the hardware that the Gerstner folks use on their fall front doors and I can replicate that for the cabinet without too much issue.
Since I don't have a Gerstner tool chest with a fall front door, can any of you that do have one tell me how much clearance there exists on each side of the fall front door? Also, can anyone tell me how thick those doors are? I would like to use relatively thin stock, but too thin and I'll have problems with warping and door pins breaking out.
I will post pictures when I have something that bears scrutiny. Right now I have a very crude prototype that highlights the problem with the fall front door design. Any info you guys might have would be helpful. I'll probably build this another time or two to get the function nailed and the start looking at veneer.
I ran across some Ottoman inlayed boxes and have become enamored of the form. This may be the death of me, but I'm having fun.
Mine has about 3/64" gap on each side(3/32 difference in opening width and the front panel width) and the front thickness is 1/2".
As a side note, there is a PBS show - "A Craftsman's Legacy" hosted by Eric Gorges. Eric tours the Gerstner factory in season 4, episode 13, they share some company history and build technique.
4. Hinge plate in carcase, channel = 3/16 wide, lower edge located 3/8 off the floor.
5. Door side clearance, by feeler gauge, door is 0.062” less wide than carcase inside width. Critical dimension, because door has to be snaked into the channels after the carcase is finished. May have to file right-side pin. See bideo at Gerstner site on door removal and replacement.
Be glad to supply further photos and dimensions! I have a considerably older Gerstner, if you want a double check on something.
