Mark Mandell - Gone Round In New Jersey
I'm restoring my fil's steel tool box. Has a 2-part top with 2 sets of fold-out parts trays linked to the lid halves. The finish was olive-drab crackle. I'm getting the rust converted with phosphoric but would like to repaint with the same stuff after a light soda blast. Anyone here have a source for the paint. The box is upwards of 60+ years old.

several of the spray paints have special effects in various colors. Not all big box stores carry the full line. Look on the internet by brand before chasing from Lowes to HD and Menards.

Most metals are painted by electrostatic methods.
It *might* be possible to get a close match from your local auto parts supplier if they make "rattle cans" of touch up paint.

A good auto paint store will be able to match a color sample.
I would suggest you go to one with the toolbox and get some suggestions.

After doing some wire brushing a faint name came up: "kennedy"
Hmmm, could that be the company and are they still around?
BINGO! Google is my friend. email sent to the company's (Kennedy Manufacturing in Ohio) support office re the paint.

Auto paint store would be my thought as well. I have an automotive finishes store near me that can mix any color I can imagine and put it in rattle cans. I also bought some using the manufacturer's color name and it matched perfectly. It's real handy to have places like that but may take some looking.

Didn't know Kennedy produced any chests with "Olive Drab paint", I have 1 or 2 of their chests and several of the Tool & Die, Maintenance workers and Model shop personnel I worked with prior to my retirement owned them. Some were quite old, but all were a textured Brown paint!

I guess with all the use and stuff spilled on the box over 60+ years by a plumber and crew the wrinkled brown took on a definite greenish cast. After the blast, I'll repaint with Hammerite Rust Cap brown and call it "done."
